Archadeck of Fort Worth creates a pergola with pizazz in Southlake, TX

Pergola in Southlake, TX by Archadeck of Fort Worth

If you think the pergola is just another pretty face in the backyard, think again.

When you think of an outdoor structure that would serve as a shade structure what would be the first image to pop into your mind? A covered porch or covered patio? Or maybe a roofed cabana by the pool on a scorching hot Texas afternoon? Most often our minds are trained to take us to an image that is familiar and safe, but often times outdoor structures that you would least likely suspect to provide shade and cover can actually pull off the job with loads of character and style to boot. Take for example, the pergola.

Design rendering with pergola in Southlake, TX by Archadeck of Fort Worth

This final design rendering prepared by Archadeck of Fort Worth helped these Southlake, TX homeowners visualize the finished project.

Pergolas were originally designed as a garden feature to form a shaded pathway or walkway. These Southlake, TX homeowners had the right idea when they decided to incorporate a stunning pergola into their backyard patio. This pergola will serve as a focal point and place of interest in terms of design, and serve the function of blocking the sun’s harsh rays as well.

Southlake, TX before pergola

This photo shows the backyard area before the pergola was installed

A pergola used as a patio cover, or cover for a porch  has in itself much potential to offer shade. Depending on the variance between the cross beams that cover the upper portion of the pergola. A pergola built with the cross beams closer together offers much more shade than one with more distance between the slats. Archadeck of Fort Worth also offers pergola owners a way to increase the sun protection and offer protection from rain and the elements while keeping the original design of your pergola intact. This is made possible by using a Polygal cover atop the pergola.

Southlake TX pergola with polygal covering see clarity

This image shows the clarity of using a Polygal pergola cover

Polygal covers are nearly invisible and consist of a rigid sheet structure made from lightweight polycarbonate plastic. They are flexible and are virtually unbreakable and  also completely recycled using post-consumer waste. Polygal covers offer excellent thermal insulation, UV protection and provide extra strength under wind, rain and snow.

Southllake, TX pergola by Archadeck of Fort Worth

The pergola serves a dual function of style and protection for these Southlake, TX homeowners

We were able to provide these Southlake, TX homeowners protection from moisture and sun by installing a Polygal cover to this pergola. The addition of the cover permits the homeowners to have a beautiful pergola which functions similar to a covered patio. This  Polygal topped pergola covers the entire space just as a patio cover would, the only difference is that with a pergola you do lose the ability to add creature comforts such as electrical for fans, speakers and the like. What you gain by using a pergola in a unique and highly functional manner makes up for the little extras that are not be feasible within a pergola.

These homeowners are ecstatic with their new space, and are glad they made the decision to think outside the box in terms of adding a pergola that serves as a shade structure for their backyard. Now the homeowners have a beautifully protected space within the confines of the pergola which include areas for grilling, dining and relaxing. This area also cozies up to their relaxing hot tub. Who could possibly ask for more?

Why is winter a GREAT time to build a new covered patio?

November 17th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

North Arlington Texas re-decking with fire pit

This deck includes a custom fire pit, another facet in the creation of the deck as an outdoor oasis

Many areas all around the country suffer from harsh winters filled with snow, ice, and low temperatures. Fortunately, Fort Worth, TX is not one of those areas. With our mild winters, outdoor activities that are usually unheard of in other areas of the country are possible here. Building and construction is no exception. Having to deal with the worries of severely cold weather and dealing with a frost line aren’t even considerations in our neck of the woods.  So even though mother nature is of little concern when planning an addition to enhance your  outdoor living, making the decision to build your outdoor structure during the late fall and winter months however, does have it’s advantages.

During the spring and summer any reputable contractor will have tremendous backlogs. The waiting list to have an outdoor structure built is shorter during the fall and winter, so therefore you can have your finished structure sooner. This means you will get to utilize and enjoy  your outdoor structure sooner as well.

Custom Deck with Railing

This deck makes a great place to spend a "stay-cation" with family and friends

Along with a shorter backlog and wait times, choosing to build now has its economic advantages as well. During the fall and winter there is less of a demand on building materials and this decrease in demand causes a decrease in prices. Lower prices, and if you are financing your venture, lower interest rates as well, can save you a lot of green by choosing a late fall or winter construction.

Sun room over large curved patio

Sun room over large curved patio

Another positive aspect of building now is a drop in temperatures here in the Texas area. Texas summers can be brutal on construction crews with high humidity and temperatures into the triple digits. Choosing to start your venture in the late fall and winter will help you beat the heat.  Our fall and winter temperatures are warm, mild and wonderful. This will mean less hydration breaks for the installers, and more efficiency and faster turnover times on having your outdoor structure ready to enjoy sooner.

If you are planning on purchasing a new suite of outdoor furniture to adorn your outdoor living area, waiting until a late fall or winter construction can drive prices on elements such as these to rock-bottom. Many times the savings that can be expected on outdoor furnishings and accessories during the “off-season” can be a driving force in choosing to build now. You can make your dollar go further and possibly upgrade to a better level of furnishings. This concept will make the bargain shopper in all of us quite happy.

Fort Worth covered patio 3

This Fort Worth covered patio has columns, pergola and a covered porch.

Above all, having your outdoor structure up and running when the first hints of spring roll around is incentive enough to build now. While your neighbors are waiting in anticipation to have their screened porch, or outdoor kitchen completed you will be sitting pretty in yours.  There is no better feeling than having your structure completed and being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor in complete comfort and beauty when outdoor living season comes to call.

A deck with a decadent view of the downtown Fort Worth skyline by Archadeck of Fort Worth

Stunning view of the Fort Worth skyline from this composite rooftop deck by Archadeck of Fort Worth

Stunning view of the Fort Worth skyline from this composite rooftop deck by Archadeck of Fort Worth

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, downtown Fort Worth was home to thousands of cowboys who spent their days off in downtown Fort Worth after working tirelessly on the Chisholm Trail. Nowadays, downtown Fort Worth is home to a diverse mix of restaurants, parks, shopping, businesses and some of the most beautiful skylines in all of Texas.

Recently, we were contacted by a homeowner who owned a downtown Fort Worth condominium to design a roof top and lower level deck for the complex. His desire was to build a deck that would be the perfect spot to breathe in the stunning skyline of downtown Fort Worth. Archadeck of Fort Worth was able to turn one homeowner’s wishes into a reality with a design that captures the essence of the  Fort Worth downtown and wrapped it all up with the gift of durability and low-maintenance, so the homeowner would have a deck that would not restrict the beautiful view or put a damper on his outdoor living enjoyment.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The existing deck at the complex was constructed of pressure treated wood and was definitely worse for wear. The customer wanted us to replace the deck with composite because of the weather resistance. We designed an upper-level rooftop  composite deck that sits atop the 4th story of the condominium complex and also designed a matching lower level composite deck on the ground floor as well. The deck was finished with TimberTech Reliaboard in the cedar hue. This design is like a breath of fresh air for the homeowner because their existing deck was actually coming apart.

Alternate view of lower deck by Archadeck of Fort Worth

The lower level deck on the condominium complex was also constructed of TimberTech Reliaboard.

The new composite decks also include a bench to cover  the exposed exhaust, a planter,  and we also built a wall around the AC unit. All of this was done using the TimberTech Reliaboard decking plank and the result gives the area an urban, clean feel that  still allows the beautiful view to be the star of the show.  TimberTech Reliaboard is a front-runner among composite decking with a 25 year limited warranty. Reliaboard also guards against splintering and rotting, is weather resistant and never needs staining or painting. It also guards against stains and only needs minimal maintenance consisting of simple soap and water cleanup. TimberTech Reliaboard has the look of real wood, without the headaches of the real thing. You get the best of both worlds with this composite decking product, so it was the perfect choice for this unique deck.

Crane assistance to get materials for rooftop deck

This shows the crane actually transporting the composite decking carefully to its 4th story rooftop destination.

Since the rooftop deck is located on the 4th story of the complex, Archadeck of Fort Worth had to keep their project management on their toes. We actually hired a crane to assist with the delivery of the materials to make certain the decking material reached its intended destination with the utmost care and in a timely manner. This is just one example of the ingenuity we use to make sure the customers needs and wants are taken care of with professionalism and integrity. We do what we have to do when a unique obstacle challenges us to make sure the job is done right, down to the last decking board. A professional builder will always keep the customers best interests in mind, and do whatever needs to be done in order to make sure they are happy with whatever outdoor structure  is being built for them. This is an excellent example of why we call it “the Archadeck difference“.

If you have a unique circumstance or location that you would like to add a new  composite deck to, or even re-deck an existing deck in the ultra efficient and durable composites that are available, contact Archadeck of Fort Worth and let us work to achieve an outdoor structure that will let you take in your  own beautiful view, even in your own backyard. This composite deck by Archadeck of Fort Worth gives these homeowners the best of both worlds

November 3rd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Fort_Worth_composite_double_deck_fire_pit_hot_tub_deck

This custom design rendering by Archadeck of Fort Worth details the entire finished project to the homeowners before construction began.

If you are thinking about the addition of a new deck onto your home or if you are considering re-decking an existing deck there are a vast number of choices to consider using as your decking material. There are a number of factors to consider when making your decision on what decking material to use. Wood, naturally is a popular choice, but there are materials available to homeowners now that exceed the performance that wood can promise. These include low-maintenance, and long-lasting materials that even come with guarantees to match. Let’s explore the genre of composite and PVC decking to give you the “skinny” on why so many homeowners are making these materials their choice among decking materials.

before_new_double_deck

This photo shows the area before the transformation began.

We recently re-decked and extended  a double-deck for homeowners here in Fort Worth, TX which was constructed using TimberTech composite decking in Reliaboard. Reliaboard emulates the look of real wood and offered these homeowners all the benefits of composite decking at an affordable price. Composites such as these won’t crack, splinter, or rot over time like traditional wood decks can. Composites also won’t ever need staining or sealing, just a little soap and water cleanup is the only maintenance necessary to keep this composite deck looking new. Reliaboard also comes with a 25-year limited warranty. TimberTech is among the heavy hitters in the world of composite and PVC decking materials. Other composite and PVC decking manufacturers to add to that lineup are AZEK, Trex, and Fiberon.

These Fort Worth homeowners came to us with the desire to transform their existing double-deck into an area that would enhance their entertaining. They wanted a design that would incorporate a fire pit, as well as a hot tub deck and plenty of room in between to enjoy. Archadeck of Fort Worth came up with the perfect pairing in their design with curvilinear angles that offered a double composite deck with plenty of room for a hot tub and a custom fire pit surrounded by floating benches. We put together a custom 3-dimensional design rendering for the homeowners that met and exceeded their expectations of the anticipated transformation of the area.

Fort_Worth_TimberTech_deck_with_floating_benches_and_hot_tub

This angle shows how well the fire pit and TimberTech deck mingle together beautifully.

We re-decked the homeowners existing decks with TimberTech Reliaboard in Cedar. We also extended the lower deck to incorporate two separate areas , one on either side, for the beautiful custom fire pit and a hot tub deck as well. The results are breathtaking because now the homeowners have the mingled elements of fire and water to enjoy at their discretion which adds to the beauty of this gorgeous, multifunctional, low maintenance pleasure deck. The use of the composite decking  was even introduced into the floating benches that surround the fire pit, making the perfect place to roast the perfect s’more.

Fort_Worth_fire_pit_with_composite_deck

A close up of the custom fire pit, which is designed within the TimberTech deck with a custom stone surround and floating benches for added comfort .

We have watched composite and PVC decking span to new heights of popularity in the past few years. The main reason behind this is the carefree attributes associated with owning a composite or PVC deck. Composite and PVC decking offers homeowners the luxury of having the look of real wood with minimal maintenance. Along with having a deck that looks great for many years using these materials can ensure that you are protected against mold, mildew and insect damage to your deck, as well as protection from staining.

Architectural_drawings_Fort_Worth_double_TimberTech_deck

This architectural drawing shows the unique curvilinear design for the new composite deck.

This particular deck has given these Fort Worth homeowners all they could’ve asked for and more. The unique design incorporated plenty of room for family and friends and the creative design used to house the hot tub and fire pit will add intimacy to the function of these delightful areas. Archadeck of Fort Worth was able to take this space and turn it into a multifunctional outdoor structure that pours beauty, durability, low maintenance and functionality into one area that will bring these homeowners years of carefree enjoyment.

This mesmerizing cabana-style detached covered patio in Colleyville, TX is almost perfected

Colleyville, TX cabana style covered patio 85% completed

We are on the finish line with our construction of this outdoor oasis construction in Colleyville, TX . We refer to the progress as “almost perfected” as opposed to “almost done” because this  structure is just too breathtaking to refer to in an average way. We have charted the progression through the entire construction through our blogs and You Tube videos and we are currently 85% completed with this incredible outdoor structure.

granite_counter_tops_Fort_Worth_outdoor_kitchen_with_outdoor_fireplace

The outdoor kitchen within the cabana has granite counter tops which compliment the Austin stone used throughout the structure.

The structure incorporates a cabana outdoor structure with an outdoor kitchen and outdoor fireplace finished with beautiful Austin stone in nicotine. The structure is accented by a stunning pergola on one end.  The cabana style  covered patio’s  exterior features custom stone eyebrows that tie into the custom stone columns using the nicotine Austin stone. Here is a video charting the progress we have completed so far…

The cabana style covered patio was designed in a L-shaped design to compliment and wrap the design of the patio into the homeowners existing water feature but to serve a functional value as well as an aesthetic one. Using an L-shaped covered patio instead of a typical square design allows the separate functional areas of this covered patio to operate on their own merit. This means the outdoor kitchen will “feel” like a real kitchen area, and the seating and dining areas will feel like they are used in an environment of exclusivity, as opposed to having a large area with everything thrown together with no rhyme or reason. Each area of the cabana’s interior provides a separate function for the homeowners, and the L-shape planning of the structure allows for the areas to feel separate but offer fluidity within the structure. The shape of the covered patio offers plenty of room for the addition of outdoor furnishings and accessories as well,  with plenty of room to flow from one area to another and ample pull-out room for stools and chairs.

A patio cover and outdoor kitchen for these Keller, TX homeowners that looks and flows with originality to the home

Keller_TX_patio_cover_design_rendering

This custom design rendering shows how Archadeck of Fort Worth incorporated beauty and functionality into this patio cover.

Here is a covered patio we build when these Keller, TX homeowners approached us to construct a custom patio cover for the rear of their beautiful  home. The challenge was to design a covered patio that would harmonize and tie in with the roof lines as well as the dormer located above the intended location of the patio cover. As you can see from the 3-D design rendering we prepared for these homeowners, the design of the structure actually “gels” with the unique roof lines and architecture of the home so well that the patio cover looks as if it were original to the residence.

house_before_difficult_space_to_build Keller, TX

Archadeck of Fort Worth was able to overcome this Keller, TX homes design challenges and add a stunning covered patio.

Another view of ceiling in Keller, TX covered patio

We were able to tie the patio cover into this existing Keller, TX home and make it appear original to the house.

The homeowners had approximately 350 square feet of usable space to build the structure. Within that limited area we were  not only able to design a patio cover that is a real head turner, but the structure also includes a fully functional outdoor kitchen complete with gas grill, chargriller, smoker, bun warmer and serving and preparation area. The whole patio cover was designed and built with an eye on creating an aesthetically appealing area that packs a great deal of functionality within the area as well. The covered patio is perfect for entertaining, relaxing and the perfect spot for taking advantage of the warm Texas evenings and dining outdoors.

Keller, TX patio cover even spot loves

Even the family dog loves the new patio cover.

The patio cover has aggregate concrete flooring that spans approximately 250 square feet with two 36″ stone columns. We used a hip roof on the structure that ties in beautifully to the roof lines on either side of the patio and doesn’t affect the dormer located above the roof of the patio cover. The  outdoor kitchen area is flanked by a custom stone wall that houses the kitchen appliances and implements and adds additional space to the kitchens design by allowing for a food preparation/ serving area for these Keller, TX homeowners. The structure is wired with electrical for the recessed can lights as well as a ceiling fan perfect for  cooling down on those warm Texas days. The patio cover incorporates a unique feature of a 20′ iron fence with gate that will keep the family dog out of the structure while the outdoor kitchen feature is in use. This feature serves this purpose well and also adds privacy to the structure.

Archadeck of Fort Worth turns a small space into an outdoor oasis big on style and function.

The completed patio cover includes a dining area and a partially shaded pergola by Archadeck of Fort Worth.

Sometimes in this line of business it is the little things that mean a lot. It is  really wonderful to watch a project come to fruition and to watch the excitement and satisfaction the homeowners experience once their outdoor structure is completed. When we dive into a new project the first thing we do is take the homeowners desires, tastes and preferences into consideration before writing up the contract, preparing the specifications or creating a design rendering. Once all the bases are covered as to what would entail the perfect pairing of comfort, beauty, style and function to suit the homeowners individual needs then we are ready to start building their perfect place in the sun. One such example of all these elements put into action is this project we recently completed for these Fort Worth homeowners where we able take a relatively small space and create more than they could’ve ever imagined.

before_new_patio_cover

This photo shows the area before construction began.

The space Archadeck of Fort Worth had to work with was relatively small. Even for the lack of space we were able to create two complete  outdoor rooms for these homeowners. One of the spaces will serve as an outdoor dining room and the other will serve as a sunny patio. Not only were we able to unify the spaces to work together we were also able to squeeze in a gorgeous pergola that will have partial shade as well. The grill area is close to the kitchen door  of the residence which is important, as well as the location of the grill area in relation to the table. All of these factors play into the functionality and appeal of the structures to work together for ultimate comfort and convenience.

Fort_Worth_covered_patio_design_rendering

This is a photo of the design rendering initially composed for this job.

When you look at the initial design rendering which was composed before construction began for this  patio and pergola combination you will notice the subtle yet lovely changes that were made to improve upon the structure. In some cases Archadeck of Fort Worth along with the homeowners make changes to achieve a better end result. In this case the stone seating/serving area wall was replaced with an open pass to which the patio itself was finished with a curvilinear edge to make more room for outdoor furniture, plantings and general entertaining space. The decision to make use of this area and leave it open as opposed to closing it off was a good one, it opens the space to give it a lighter less formal feel.

Fort_Worth_pergola_patio_and_patio_cover

In this photo you can see the differences in the completed structure.

When I look back on the completion of a structure such as this it reminds me that good things can come in little packages. Being able to witness the joy on the homeowner’s face when the completed structure exceeds their expectations makes me realize the work we are doing here can really change a person’s life for the better.

I know this would mean enough turkey sandwiches to possibly last until 2012, but the functionality of having a secondary kitchen when holiday entertaining and food preparation comes into play would make the holidays less hectic for the host.

By choosing an autumn construction, you will be able to get more for your money.

#3) Enough savings to even make Ebenezer Scrooge happy- With the end of peak building season comes deep discounts. Many outdoor and patio furniture retailers slash prices to make room for next year’s inventory. If you are building your outdoor structure in the fall, you will be able to take advantage of these deep discounts and get more for your money and be able to afford higher quality furniture at lesser quality prices. The same can be said about material costs as well, a decrease during off-season in terms of demand on materials can sometimes lead to savings on materials.

#4) Patience is a virtue-  Another prime reason to build your outdoor structure in the fall is that there is less wait time to begin construction. The backlog is smaller and this makes the wait-time minimal in most cases. Making the decision to build now will ensure being able to enjoy the benefits of your completed structure sooner.

#5) An outdoor structure can possibly benefit you at tax time- In some cases building your structure in the later quarters of the year can help you out when it comes tax time. In addition, if you intend to finance your new outdoor structure, the interest rates are still extremely low. The current standing in the economy can mean a lower payment each month on your new structure as well. Lower interest rates can save you a tremendous amount over the long haul.

If you are on the fence about beginning your outdoor structure now, keep in mind all the times between now and spring when your completed outdoor structure can add joy to you and your family’s life. How many families can boast that Santa filled their stockings hung with care from their outdoor fireplace?
