Add 2 rooms to the back of your house with a covered patio and a pergola-covered outdoor kitchen

November 10th, 2010 § 1 Comment

When a homeowner calls me about a project they have in mind, the first thing I do is go out to visit their home. The design process is so important and I need to see the home and take measurements before I can propose a design to suit their needs. When I first drive up to the home, I look at everything. I look at the materials used on the house, the architectural style and even the yard manicuring. The better feel I have for what the homeowners like, the better I will be at proposing the best structure for them.

As you can see, this house is stunning. The green color is bold but it looks beautiful with the contrasting white windows and columns. One of the things I noted especially about the front of the home was the columns.

White columns on front of home

This was an important architectural feature. We always want to blend the structures we build seamlessly into the home. We use the same roof styles and even the same roof tiles. We match all of the materials with our goal of making the structure look original to the home.

As you can see from the back of the home, there were no columns being used. I decided to integrate the same columns into the structures on the back of the home to continue the gorgeous front of the home around to the back.

As you look at the back of the home, you can see that the green color is so much so apparent. On the front of the home, the white architectural details soften the strong color and make a bold statement. So I knew I was going to recommend white structures.

Here’s what the homeowner was looking for. For the most part, they were just looking for protection from the sun. They also wanted to live more in their back yard and they wanted an outdoor eating and cooking area close to the indoor cooking and eating area.

Here’s comes the tough part when deciding what to build and where to build it – the roof lines. Our goal is to make our structures look original to the home. So, we want to utilize the same roof lines as the existing home. We also need to be able to build and blend these new roofs into the existing home so they don’t look “added on”. The home incorporated a number of hip roofs.

So here’s what we proposed to build:

The back of the home is very large and had plenty of space to accommodate an outdoor living area. We proposed 2 structures that would serve as 2 rooms on the back of the home. The first area is a covered patio area over to the left. The second area is an outdoor kitchen with a pergola cover. This provides the family the opportunity to either get complete sun cover or to enjoy some sun while still providing a decent amount of sun protection.

Here is the design rendering.

One of the things my customers tell me they absolutely love is the ability to see a design rendering of what their finished project will look like. Deciding to build an outdoor structure is an expensive investment in your home and it’s an investment you hope to enjoy for many years to come. And, the fact of that matter is, that’s it’s just difficult to envision what your custom structure will look like on your home.

As you can see with the design rendering above, the homeowners knew exactly what they would be getting. They loved this design and signed off on it.

Here is a picture of the finished project to compare to the design rendering.

Notice the big difference the addition of the white color makes to the back of the home. Also noticed that we brought the column architecture to the back of the home by integrating it into this structure. We used tapered decorative columns with traditional bases and caps – a Tuscan cap and base.

For the pergola, we built with white aluminum to bring the white contrast color to the back yard.

Pergola

We built the pergola to fan around the part of the home that protruded utilizing the column architecture to support the pergola. The pergola has fine slats which allows for minimal sun and also gorgeous shadows.

Under the pergola is the outdoor kitchen. For the bar top, we used natural Austin Lueders stone with saw cut edges. With the saw cut edges, they chisel all around perimeter of stone to give rough textured look.

The homeowners love to to grill and smoke their food so the kitchen included an outdoor grill and a spot for their Big Green Egg.

Both the covered patio and the pergola incorporate full electrical for multiple ceiling fans. The outdoor kitchen also included a sink. You’ll also note from the pictures that we dramatically increased the size of the covered patio to allow for ample living space.
